Focal Point was included on the Tampa Bay Business Journal's Fast 50 list this year. This list recognizes privately owned companies in the Tampa Bay area that have had remarkable revenue growth in the last three years. We're excited about this recognition and wanted to share our Fast 50 profile to give you a glimpse into the role our people play in this growth.
How would you describe what your company does to a friend or family member who may not know?
We make sure that companies that have your personal data – your credit card number, health information, account logins and passwords, Social Security number, etc. – can keep that data secure, even as hackers attempt to steal it every day.
We do this by testing the security of websites and apps, helping companies implement stronger systems, ensuring they are compliant with data-protection laws and regulations, and training their staff to be better at detecting and responding to threats.
What are some key accomplishments your company has achieved in the past 12 months?
The past 12 months have been eventful for us. We’ve recruited more than 100 people to join our team, picked up big and exciting clients across the country (including winning a major cybersecurity training contract with the federal government), and have bolstered already strong offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
But perhaps more noticeable to the outside observer, we rebranded our company in January under the Focal Point Data Risk name and logo. We united three companies with three names into a single company with a crystal-clear vision: to change the way organizations measure, improve, and control their biggest data risks. The name Focal Point is the perfect representation of that mission – we help our clients focus on the data that matters most.
What's the most impressive business statistic you can share about your company?
Focal Point is proud to work with five of the 10 largest companies in the U.S. (by annual revenue), as well as serve the federal government and military. While these clients represent a small sample of the more than 1,000 clients served by Focal Point, the trust of these category leaders is a testament to our innovative services, exceptional people and quality delivery.
What is your recruitment strategy for new hires?
Focal Point is hiring aggressively, as always. We give new hires the opportunity to grow very quickly here, exposing them to a variety of project types and allowing them to grow into areas that best suit their interests and abilities. In fact, that’s the reason most people choose Focal Point. We look to recruit hires who are smart, entrepreneurial, committed to client service, and not afraid to get their hands dirty.
Locally, we recruit heavily from the University of South Florida, University of Tampa, University of Florida, and Florida State University. We also recruit former military IT and security professionals, and rely heavily on homegrown talent from Tampa’s budding tech industry.
What is your company "really fast" at?
Growth. Focal Point boasts a 28 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), far outpacing the average in our industry. This growth, of course, is a testament to our excellent employees and our commitment to outstanding client service. We’re proud of how fast we are growing and look forward to continuing on this trajectory in 2017 and into 2018.

What does your company do for fun?
Our Tampa headquarters is a tight-knit team. We’re passionate about our Tampa Bay Lightning, competitive about fantasy football, and enjoy our team happy hours. We are also active participants in local charitable activities, like the annual Miles for Moffitt 5k and our yearly holiday toy drive.
